The Director 8 and Lingo BibleOne of the most ambitious undertakings of my career, the Director and Lingo Bible is also one of my most satisfying. The reaction to the book has been overwhelming. I was very excited to learn that many design schools have adopted the Director Bible as the primary textbook for Director course work. My co-author John Nyquist and I set out to create one of the most comprehensive books on Director wrapped around real world examples. Tired of other Director books that give seemly random examples of the ways that the program can be used, we took a different approach that uses a interactive "Explore Mars" theme consistently throughout the book. We feel that this technique gives the examples used to teach the program a more cohesive look and feel. I wrote the first ten chapters that cover the authoring aspects of Director, ranging from animating sprites to creating full-blown applications using Director's built-in behaviors. I also included a chapter that covers multimedia production techniques such as flowcharting and workflow considerations. My co-author John handled the Lingo chapters of the book. He starts with a comprehensive discussion of Object-oriented programming then moves on to cover the most advanced features of Lingo including the new imaging commands introduced in version 8. The most important chapters may be 9 and 10, which cover multimedia presentation and production methodologies from a Director developer's point of view. In chapter 9, "Creating an Interactive Presentation," the book explains the reasons and methods for creating a handsome and accessible interface. And in chapter 10, "Designing a Production Process," it discusses strategies for evaluating the scope of a project such as laying it out as a flowchart to help determine the amount of work involved.
